Flood Protection

In 2006 the city embarked on the largest project in this city's history to improve the 50 miles of levees that protect West Sacramento to a minimum of 200 year flood protection. Along with its partners from the state (Department of Water Resources and Reclamation Board) and the federal government (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers), this multi-year project with an estimated cost of $460 million is projected to be completed in 2025.
Sixty-five percent of the funding for the project will come from the federal government, and another twenty-five percent from the state. West Sacramento's 10% share will be paid from a combination of property tax assessments and a sales tax override.
The repairs to the levees include creating walls down some the levees into the ground (slurry walls) to prevent underseepage, building setback levees, and other fixes.
